Amortisation calculator

See how a loan is paid off year by year, with the interest, principal and balance left.

About this calculator

Early payments on a loan are mostly interest, and later payments are mostly the money you borrowed. This calculator shows that split for every year of the term, so you can see how quickly the balance falls.

It assumes a fixed rate and equal monthly payments.

Common questions

What does amortisation mean?

It is paying off a loan gradually with regular payments that cover both interest and part of the amount you borrowed.

Why is the balance slow to drop at first?

Interest is charged on what you still owe, so at the start more of each payment goes to interest.
