Income tax calculator

See how much income tax and National Insurance come out of your yearly income, and what you take home.

About this calculator

This calculator uses the 2026/27 rates for employees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The first £12,570 is tax free, income up to £50,270 is taxed at 20%, up to £125,140 at 40%, and anything above at 45%. If you earn over £100,000 the tax-free amount falls by £1 for every £2. Employee National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that.

Pension contributions, student loans, benefits in kind, tax codes and Scottish rates are not included, so your payslip may differ.

Common questions

Is this the same as my payslip?

It is a close guide for a standard tax code. Pension payments, student loan repayments and other deductions change the real figure.

Does it work for Scotland?

No. Scotland sets its own income tax bands, so the result will differ for people who live there.
