Calorie calculator

Estimate how many calories you need each day to keep, lose or gain weight.

About this calculator

The calculator first works out your basal metabolic rate with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then multiplies it by your activity level to estimate the calories you burn in a day. Eating about 500 fewer a day is roughly half a kilo of loss each week, and about 500 more is roughly half a kilo of gain.

It is an estimate, not medical advice. Do not eat very low calorie diets without medical support.

Common questions

How accurate is it?

It is a good starting point. Real needs vary, so adjust based on how your weight changes over a few weeks.

How many calories are in half a kilo?

Roughly 3,500, which is where the 500 a day figure comes from.
