Gravel calculator

Work out the volume and weight of gravel, crushed stone, sand or topsoil for a drive, path or bed.

About this calculator

Enter the length, width and depth of the area and choose the material. The calculator gives the volume in cubic yards and metres and the weight in tonnes and US tons.

Suppliers sell by weight or by volume, so both are shown. Densities are typical, and a real load can differ.

Measurements and terms explained

Tonne
1,000 kg, the metric ton used in the UK and most countries.
US ton
2,000 lb, about 0.907 tonnes.
Bulk density
The weight of the material per unit of volume, including the air between pieces.
Settling allowance
Extra material because loose stone compacts after it is laid.
