Tile calculator
Work out the number of tiles and boxes to cover a floor or wall, including grout joints and waste.
About this calculator
Enter the area length and width, then the tile size and grout joint. The calculator includes the grout gap around each tile, adds your waste allowance and rounds up to whole tiles.
Add the number of tiles per box to get the boxes to buy, and a price to see the cost.
Measurements and terms explained
- Tile size
- The length and width of one tile, not including grout.
- Grout joint
- The gap between tiles, usually 2 to 5 mm (1/16 to 3/16 inch).
- Waste allowance
- Extra tiles for cuts, breakages and future repairs.
- Tiles per box
- Printed on the box. Boxes are sold whole, so the total is rounded up.
Common questions
How much extra should I buy?
About 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal or patterned ones, so you have spares for cuts and mistakes.
Does grout width matter?
Yes. Each tile takes up its own size plus one grout joint, which matters on small tiles.
